One person has died and a second was taken to the hospital by helicopter after a train hit a vehicle early Friday at a crossing in Benton, authorities said.

Benton Police Department spokesman Matt Burks said it happened shortly after 4:15 a.m. at the railroad crossing over Sidell Road at Benton Parkway.

Burks said one person died and a second was taken by Med Flight to a local hospital. There was no immediate word on that person's condition later Friday morning.

Burks said he had no specific details on how the wreck occurred.

"It's still under investigation," he said, adding the area remained closed to through traffic while officers worked the scene.
