Arkansas, Mississippi meet in Governors Cup

Arkansas will begin defense of its Governors Cup title today at Northwood Country Club in Meridian, Miss., with 10 four-ball matches in the morning and 10 foursome matches in the afternoon against its Mississippi counterparts.

Arkansas, which has a 6-4 series lead, has won the last two championships, winning at Greenville Country Club in Greenville, Miss., in 2014 and then again last year at Hot Springs Country Club.

United States Golf Association champions Stan Lee (2007 USGA Senior Amateur) of Tumbling Shoals, Louis Lee (2011 USGA Senior Amateur) of Heber Springs and Steve Wilson (2008 USGA Mid-Amateur) of Ocean Springs, Miss., are in the field.

Arkansas pairs playing this morning in four-ball matches are Ron Richard of Fort Smith and Robert Green of Warren; Louis Lee and Frank Ramey of Little Rock; Ronny Ocker of Van Buren and David Shirey of Camden; Stan Lee and Clark Fitts of Little Rock; Bev Hargraves of Helena-West Helena and John Tetens of Conway; Wes McNulty of White Hall and Trey Schaap of North Little Rock; Chris Jenkins of Little Rock and Nick Zimmerman of North Little Rock; Beau Glover of North Little Rock and Stephen Cox of Jonesboro; Kevin Walker and Stafford Gray, both of Sherwood; and Chris Dixon and Matt Feimster, both of Sheridan.

Competition will end Saturday with 20 singles matches. As defending champion, Arkansas needs no worse than a 20-20 tie to retain the cup, while Mississippi needs at least 211/2 points to win the title it last won in 2013 at Texarkana Country Club.

Arkansas men draw Wisconsin

The No. 21 University of Arkansas men's team was selected Thursday as the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Kohler Regional, which will be played at Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys Course in Kohler, Wisc., on May 16-18.

The Razorbacks, making their ninth consecutive NCAA regional appearance, will be paired with No. 4 ranked Illinois, No. 10 Florida State and No. 16 Florida as one of eight top 50 teams in the field.

The top five teams from each of six regional sites will comprise the field for the NCAA championships in Eugene, Ore.

Coach Brad McMakin has led the Razorbacks to four NCAA championship appearances in the last seven years, including a runner-up finish in 2009.

Arkansas, led by senior Taylor Moore, had a spring record of 71-23-3 and a fourth-place finish at the SEC championships, the team's highest placement in eight years.

Arkansas was one of 11 SEC teams in the 81-team NCAA tournament field.

Moore leads the Razorbacks with a 71.4 stroke average, followed by Nicolas Echavarria (72.3), Alvaro Ortiz (72.8), Kolton Crawford (73.4) and Charles Kim (73.8).

UA women tied for 8th at regional

The No. 7 Arkansas women's team shot a 14-over-par 298 Thursday to end the first day of the Stanford NCAA Regional tied for eighth place in Palo Alto, Calif.

Led by sophomore Alana Uriell and freshman Cara Gorlei, who each shot a 1-over 72, the Razorbacks are 11 strokes behind No. 2 Southern California which led the 18-team field with a 3-over 287.

The top six teams from the three-day tournament advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on May 20-25.

Tech's Burke advances to D-II championships

Arkansas Tech freshman Bryce Burke shot a final-round 73 to finish in a tie for third at the NCAA Division II Midwest/Central Region Championships on Wednesday in Allendale, Mich.

Burke, who finished the three-day tournament with a 220 score, advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Arkansas Tech and Henderson State finished tied for 13th place with a team total of 922.

Price Murphree and Mauricio Lira led the Reddies men, finishing in a tie for 14th with a 226 along with Arkansas Tech's Julio Arguelles.

Also, junior Carson Roberts of Conway finished tied for 65th individually for Washburn University which finished ninth in team play.

Central Michigan won the men's tournament with a team score of 900.

Golden Suns tie for third at regional

The Arkansas Tech women's team finished in a tie for third place at 899 at the NCAA Division II Central Region championships Wednesday in Axtell, Neb.

Caroline Fredensborg, who shot a final-round 72 to finish in a tie for third at 218, will represent Arkansas Tech in the Division II National Championships as an individual.

Henderson State finished seventh, posting a team score of 918. Hanna Brauburger was the Reddies' top finisher (tied for 14th) with a three-round total of 225.

Augustana won the tournament with a team score of 881.
