BENTON -- A fundraiser for the Single Parent Scholarship program will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19 on the Saline County Courthouse lawn.
The menu will include BBQ pork sandwiches, chips, beans, coleslaw, dessert and soft drinks. There will also be a silent auction during the luncheon. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance or the day of the picnic. The luncheon is sponsored by the Central Arkansas Development Council.
Since the program's inception in 1990, hundreds of low-income single parents in Saline County have received financial help to complete their college education. The scholarship differs from traditional scholarships in that it is used to help the recipient offset expenses such as child care, car repair, gasoline, textbooks and tuition. The majority of the scholarship fund comes from donations and fundraising activities. It is matched dollar for dollar, up to $6,000, by the Central Arkansas Development Council.
