High school winners of quiz bowl named

Teams of students from Norfork, Hazen, Haas Hall Academy, Subiaco, Little Rock Christian, Russellville and Fayetteville recently won the 2016 Arkansas Quiz Bowl championships in their high school classifications.

The Arkansas Governor's Quiz Bowl Association awarded each first-place team $3,000 in scholarship funds and each second-place team $1,500.

The annual competition showcases students' knowledge of literature, math, science, history, art, music and economics. Teams compete in regional tournaments around the state. The two top teams from each high school classification advanced to the state finals, which were broadcast live on the Arkansas Educational Television Network.

In the 1A classification, Norfork High defeated LISA Academy-North charter school.

The Norfork team members were Ian Ruegsegger, Elias Maple, Elias Krist, Pam Braun, Jacob Moore, Alex Ruegsegger and Evan Thompson. Stacy Havner was the coach.

LISA Academy North team members were Sahana Bettadapura, Rachel Ward, Samuel Wirges, Manjunath Bettadapura, Ian Sutphin, Jennie Finch, Daniel Chen and Kierston Rayborn. Coaches were Jason Bowles and Angela Ward.

In the 2A classification, Hazen High defeated Conway Christian. The Hazen team members were Morgan Carroll, Aimee Lease, Jenna Ronquest, Abbi Ross, Ross Harper, Samuel Harper and Parker Kerr. Coaches were Nathaniel Bradow and Laura Morgan.

Conway Christian team members were Jessica Nunn, Hunter Tollett, Jackson Quick, Alec Ohlde, Marc Cochran, Scott Austin and Will Callaway. The coach was Sarah Nordin.

In 3A, Haas Hall Academy in Fayetteville defeated Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock. The Haas Hall team members were Gabe Edwards, Aubin Payne, Connor Fritsch, Ryan Hoyt, Ethan Horton, Hannah Foster, Samuel Lipson, Sai Sirigineedi, Caleb Bodishbaugh, Blake Buck, Pearce Hungate, Parker Morrison and Paulina Jeng. Tad Sours was the coach.

The Episcopal Collegiate team members were Steven Angtuaco, Jack Carney, Adam Hall, Anna Feldman, Sadie Flannery, Ethan Strauss and Samuel Rhee. Stanislaus Whittlesey and Bruce Hall were coaches.

In 4A, Subiaco Academy in Subiaco defeated Brookland High.

Subiaco team members were Axel Ntamatungiro, Walker Cobb, Jesus Calvillo, Andy Davis, Nick Langston, Juan Felipe Martinez, Davis Elliot, Will Owens, Ryan Kimberly, Haegen Hess and Diego Calvillo. Coaches were Jared Schluterman and Br. Matthias Hagge, OSB.

Brookland team members were Taylor Watkins, Kallen Smith, Hannah Seats, Olivia Langner, Dalton Thompson, Nathan Baggett, Zach Proctor and Lucas Thompson. Austin Chlapecka was the coach.

In 5A, Little Rock Christian defeated Harrison High.

Little Rock Christian team members were Luke Hankins, Tyler Blaszak, Cooper Lair, Colton Fisher, Hayden Bradberry, Gunner Dobbins and Craig Lair. Danny Erlandson was the coach.

Harrison High team members were Conner Chu, Victoria Chu, Tyler Nelson, Robbyn Rose, Matthew Law, Spencer Hinrichs, Beryl Anderson, Colton Simpson, Jonathan Hicks, Elisabeth Oak and Kennon Chu. Rance King was the coach.

In 6A, Russellville defeated Sheridan.

The Russellville team members were Shirley Garcia, Emily Jordan, Hailey Smith, Sylvia Nupp, Nathan Judd, Giancarlo Sierra, Conlee Hale, Matt Annis, Tyler Tracy, Jeremy Collins, Chris Schaubroeck, Collin Davis, Brant Collins, Philip Takach, Olivia Draughon, Spencer Skaggs and Regan Freeman. The coaches were Brandon Cooper and Paul Gray.

The Sheridan team members were Cameron Brownlee, Nathanael Grimes, Sarah Handloser, Jonathon Jodoin, Dylan Thompson and Holton Smith. The coach was Roy Wilson.

In 7A, Fayetteville High defeated Conway High.

The Fayetteville team members were Jacob Huneycutt, Saoirse Disney-McKeethen, Sarah Bondurant, Bill Bacon, Ryan Kim, Tony Pirani III, Beau Si, Albert Xu and Nate Magre. Neil Norberg was the coach.

The Conway team members were Blaine Booher, Zelda Engeler-Young, Tim Ablondi, Matthew Sweere, Harrisson Hite, Jacob Paxton, Jillian Tang, Hunter Davis, Matt Depner, Tanner Ruth and Paula Mckeep.
