SUSTAINERS

Adams is toasted for years of service to Junior League

A lean chicken thigh, orzo salad and fruit on a bed of kale, and behind this plate lunch, sugar cookies in the shape and paint of a rainbow and a cloud because, honoree Judy Adams said, when she thinks of the Junior League of Little Rock, she thinks of the Maya Angelou line, "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud."

Adams, founder of Catering to You -- which put out that spread -- and an influential board member of Our House shelter, was the honoree April 27 for the league's annual Spring Sustainer Luncheon.

A "sustainer" is a former league member who continues some level of service, by volunteering or giving or both.

Jennifer McCarty welcomed the crowd, and the Rev. Britt Skarda gave the benediction. Billie Rutherford, Sharon Bale and Georgia Mjartan all said a few words about Adams. The luncheon began with league president Marisha DiCarlo's notes on the year.

Adams framed her acceptance speech as a letter to her parents. "I think you would love knowing that at least a little of what you tried to instill in me was working. I remember what you always said and how you certainly lived it -- 'Give off the top, not just what's left.'"
