Officials filed more than 175 new counts of animal cruelty last week against a Madison County woman who was initially charged in March after 300 puppies were recovered from her home, court records show.

In addition to the two counts of animal cruelty filed against her in March, Joyce Johnson, who was born in 1948, was handed 150 misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals, plus 27 felony charges of aggravated cruelty on May 5.

Each misdemeanor charge is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to a year in jail, while each felony carries a possible $10,000 fine and six years in jail, according to an information sheet filed with the Madison County circuit court.

She may also be required to undergo a mental evaluation and treatment, the court record said.

Johnson was ordered to appear in front of a circuit court judge on June 28.
