Cody Allen, 23, was charged in the May 1 slaying of Alithia Boyd, 1, at a Flippin apartment complex where the girl, her mother and Allen lived. Allen told authorities the girl fell down the stairs, Ethredge said. The girl would have turned 2 years old next Monday.

The prosecutor originally charged Allen with first-degree battery because the infant was alive but remained on life-support at an out-of-state hospital. He amended the charge after the girl died Friday, he said.

Allen was arrested and held in the Marion County jail where authorities said he tried to hang himself. He underwent a mental evaluation and then was sent to the Arkansas Department of Correction's Ouachita River Unit in Malvern for violating parole. Allen had been convicted of residential burglary and theft of property in Baxter County in 2014, Ethredge said.

Allen will be arraigned Wednesday in Marion County Circuit Court, Ethredge said.
