NEWPORT -- A Newport man was charged with first-degree murder Friday in the death of a Newport woman and 30 counts of terroristic acts after police said he fired several shots at a car.
Andwelle S. Ellis, 19, remained in the Jackson County jail in Newport in lieu of $500,000 bail set by Jackson County District Judge Barbara Griffin.
Lt. Patrick Weatherford, a spokesman for the Newport Police Department, said Ellis is accused of shooting at a car on Hout Circle in Newport on April 15. Vanessa Thomas, 30, a passenger in the car, was struck. The driver took Thomas to a Newport hospital, where she died.
Bullets also struck the Shearer Community Center, a residence and another car, Weatherford said.
Ellis was arrested in Batesville on April 19 by local police and the U.S. Marshal's office.
