SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET

10 times Appomattox Club has paved way to education

The Appomattox Club held its 10th scholarship banquet at Pleasant Valley Country Club on May 6. The group has come a long way -- and shared a lot of fun and fellowship -- since it started with a group of men who met at the home of the late Dan Stewart near 18th and Cumberland streets in Little Rock in October 1923.

The group's purpose was to provide entertainment for members and their wives and to contribute to worthwhile civic projects around town.

It is believed to be one of the oldest social clubs in the state. Meetings are held at members' homes.

After a dinner of chicken with caper cream sauce, mashed potatoes and green beans amandine, scholarship recipients were introduced and dancing ensued, with music provided by DJ Uncle Jam, more commonly known as "King of Old School."
