Sounds of summer

Charlie Rich Jr. and Sonny Burgess & the Legendary Pacers will kick off the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' summer Arkansas Sounds concert series, 7 p.m. Friday at the Central Arkansas Library System's Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock. Tiny Alice

The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith's Academy of the Arts' Academy Playerz will stage Alice in Wonderland Jr. (adapted from the Disney animated film by David Simpatico, with additional lyrics and music by Bryan Louiselle), 7 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Breedlove Auditorium, UAFS, 4701 Grand Ave., Fort Smith.

'Sing America'

Singing Men of Arkansas will perform 15 songs in 15 different styles that trace the story of America through its unique musical contributions in a concert titled "Sing America," 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Arts Center of the Ozarks, 214 S. King Biscuit lineup

British blues legend John Mayall will be the Main Stage headliner Oct. 7 during the 31st annual King Biscuit Blues Festival, Oct. 5-8 in Helena-West Helena. The Oct. 6 headliner is Sonny Landreth, "the King of Slydeco," with special guest Roy Rogers. And legendary bluesman Charlie Musselwhite will be the Main Stage headliner Oct. 8.

Also performing Oct. 7 on the Main Stage will be Anson Funderburgh, Mike Zito, Kenny Neal and Mike Wheeler. Performers on the Lockwood-Stackhouse Acoustic Stage include the Linsey Alexander Blues Band, the Lonnie Shields Band, the Wampus Cats, the C.W. Gatlin Band and Spoonfed Blues featuring Mississippi Spoonman.

Summer season

Opera in the Ozarks, a summer music festival and training program for up-and-coming opera professionals, kicks off its 66th season at 7:30 p.m. June 17 with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony, 16311 U.S. 62 W., Eureka Springs.

The festival will offer 22 fully staged and costumed performances of Don Giovanni, Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring and a double bill of the one-act operas I Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo and Il Tabarro by Giacomo Puccini through July 19 at Inspiration Point, plus three performances at the Arend Arts Center, 1901 S.E. • Opera in the Ozarks' Studio Artists will perform an opera version of Pinocchio June 4 at Eureka Springs High School; June 7 at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks in Fayetteville; at libraries in Eureka Springs (June 11), Rogers (June 22), Fayetteville (June 25), Bentonville (June 30) and Springdale (July 7); and July 9 at the Eureka Springs Auditorium.

• An afternoon of music and art, 1 p.m. June 5 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, 600 Museum Way, Bentonville.

• Opera in the Ozarks orchestra members will perform chamber music, 7:30 p.m. July 11 at the Eureka Springs Auditorium, 36 S. Main St.

• A Taste of Opera, dinner and entertainment, 5 p.m. July 13 at Crescent Hotel, 75 Prospect Ave., Eureka Springs.

Arts symposium

The Black History Commission of Arkansas and the Arkansas History Commission will host a symposium, "African American Arts in Arkansas," 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 4 at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, W. Ninth St., Little Rock. Speakers include artists Delita Martin, Garbo Hearne, Garland Martin Taylor and Arkansas History Commission staff member Jeff Lewellen.

Topics include "Talking Palette, Hidden Artist: The Art of Arkansas's Henry Lewis Jackson," "The Soul of Arkansas: A History of Arkansas's African American Musicians" and "In Search of Self: The Preservation of Culture through African American Art." There will also be a presentation on black authors from Arkansas. Admission is free; registration is required -- deadline is May 30. Partial funding comes from the Arkansas Humanities Council. Movie Camp

The T Tauri Movie Camp is accepting registrations for its 12th annual summer youth program July 18-30 in Batesville for aspiring filmmakers up to age 18. The 2016 camp offers four workshops ranging from two to 3 1/2 days in duration: "Script to Screen Narrative Filmmaking," "Home Town Documentary," "Depicting Zombies" and "BrickFilms" (stop-motion animation utilizing Lego characters).

Workshop fees are $60-$100, including all supplies and equipment, a T Tauri T-shirt and admission to the July 30 finale screening. For students and parents or chaperones from outside the Batesville area there is a discounted rate at the Batesville Comfort Suites Hotel; ask for the Movie Camp rate for reservations made before July 5.
