Pope County students honored in Preserve our Past contest

Students from Pope County are among winners in the 25th annual Preserve Our Past art and essay invitational sponsored by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

AHPP Director Frances McSwain said the contest was held as part of Arkansas Heritage Month 2016 activities. May is Arkansas Heritage Month.

Local winners include the following:

• Isabella DeLeuil of Atkins Middle School won first place in the fifth- and sixth-grade art division for a drawing of the Atkins Chronicle Building and first place in the fifth- and sixth-grade essay division for writing about the same building.

• Eva Cole of Pottsville Junior High School won third place in the seventh- and eighth-grade essay division for writing about the Potts family’s legacy.

• Christin Flory of Atkins Middle School won third place in the fifth- and sixth-grade essay division for a piece on Galley Rock.

• Tia Franklin of Pottsville Junior High School received honorable mention in the seventh- and eighth-grade essay division for writing “How Pope County Got Its Name.”

• Andrew Tybuec of Atkins Middle School received honorable mention in the fifth- and sixth-grade essay division for writing about the Maple Springs Free Will Baptist Church.

• Catilin Isely of Atkins Middle School received honorable mention in the fifth- and sixth-grade essay division, for writing about the Oark General Store.

First-, second- and third-place winners in each division received a trophy; honorable mention recipients received a ribbon; and all students who entered received a certificate.
