4 crashes claim 5 lives within 24-hour period on Arkansas roads

Five people died in four separate crashes Sunday and Monday on Arkansas roads, two of which took place in Pulaski County less than 24 hours apart, the Arkansas State Police said.

Three people died in the Pulaski County crashes. All four crashes took place around central Arkansas.

The last of the four happened at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the westbound off-ramp on Interstate 40 at Morgan. Charles Abrams, 52, of Russellville, traveling west on I-40 in a 2002 Toyota, exited at Morgan and left the roadway.

Police said the vehicle overturned on the driver's side before striking a tree. The weather was clear and the road dry.

A crash involving a tractor-trailer rig at 11:39 a.m. Sunday at the Interstate 40/Interstate 440 interchange in North Little Rock claimed two lives.

A 2016 Kenworth tractor-trailer was traveling east on I-40 when it rear-ended an eastbound 1994 Cadillac. The rig then pushed the Cadillac into a guard rail and both vehicles overturned, police said.

Willetta Y. Reaves, 40, the driver of the Cadillac, and Danny Joe Hollis, 51, a passenger in Reaves' vehicle, died in the crash. The weather was clear and the road dry.

About an hour later, a single-vehicle crash in Perry County killed Harry R. Gunther, 59, of Roland.

Gunther was in a 2006 Toyota Tundra going north in the 2200 block of Arkansas 9 South when he failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and struck a tree, police said. The weather was clear and the road dry.

The other crash killed one person and injured another Sunday night in Saline County.

Terri Castile, 53, of Little Rock was traveling north on Arkansas 5 just south of the East Gate entrance to Hot Springs Village in a 2004 Chevrolet when her vehicle left the roadway as it came into a turn. The vehicle went down an embankment.

Castile, who was ejected, died in the crash. A passenger, Jimmy Herring, 48, of Little Rock, was injured and taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock for treatment, police said. The weather was clear and the road dry.
