Arkansas man accused of defrauding investors, federal agency

A Fort Smith man is accused of defrauding investors and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Elser’s office said Tuesday.

A 25-count indictment has charged William Jackson Moates Jr., 49, with money laundering, wire fraud, theft concerning a program receiving federal funds, mail fraud, bank fraud and theft or embezzlement from employee benefit plan, according to a news release.

Moates was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Ford in Fort Smith.

The case is being investigated by the FBI, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the U.S. Department of Labor Employee Benefits Security Administration, Elser’s office said.
