Plans for Rogers whiskey distillery approved

ROGERS -- Construction for a whiskey distillery approved by the Planning Commission on Tuesday could start in upcoming months.

The whiskey distillery, planned for 3602 W. Walnut St., could be the first in the region, said Geoffrey Bates, Bates & Associates president of engineering.

James M. Tinnin Jr., distillery owner, said the distillery could open next spring. It would include a tasting tour, he said.

Bates asked the commission to approve a waiver to remove screening from the back of the property.

"There is a bike trail behind the building and they are wanting to provide trail access," Bates said.

A 10-foot-wide sidewalk would be built by the developer to connect the trail to the distillery, Bates said. He also said bike racks will be on-site.

"Have you ever tried that?" Mike Shupe, planning commissioner, asked in a joking tone.

"Drinking while biking -- No," Bates responded to an eruption of laughter from the room.

Mark Myers, planning commissioner, said it made sense to connect the trail to the business.

"Isn't that part of the attraction of the trail?" Myers said. "To get to and from places?"

It was suggested the distillery add bushes for screening behind the business but allow a small gap for the trail. This option wouldn't need a waiver.

Bates said that should work for his client.

Tinnin said he has been researching whiskey recipes for about two years. He also has invested time in researching the best equipment to use.

The business also could start distilling other spirits in the future, Tinnin said.

The Rogers brewery scene has boomed in recent years.

Ozark Beer Co. recently announced the expansion of its operation. It will be moving from its 1700 S. First St. location to 109 N. Arkansas.

New Providence Brewing opened in March. Core Brewing, which started in Springdale, also operates a Rogers location.
