1 'no' vote kills St. Francis County jail proposal

FORREST CITY — St. Francis County Quorum Court has voted against a motion that called for a special election to approve a 1-cent tax to cover the cost of a new jail facility.

The Times-Herald reported that the motion failed with one vote against the special election due to specific wording in pre-motion in which Sheriff Bobby May requested that it pass unanimously.

Ten justices voted to accept the motion, but Justice Jimmy Long voted against it. He said no one in his district had asked him to vote in favor of the election, but some residents asked him to vote against it.

Many of the justices said that they didn't believe a unanimous vote was unnecessary in passing of the motion.
