Man accused of kidnapping ex-girlfriend from nursing home

NEWTON, Mass. — A 55-year-old Florida man has been ordered to stay away from his 62-year-old ex-girlfriend, who authorities say was kidnapped from a Massachusetts nursing home.

Investigators say David Collignon took Beth Birnbaum, who suffers from a brain aneurysm and had a stroke, from her Newton nursing home Tuesday. He was arrested Thursday after bringing her to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Collignon, of Middleburg, Fla., was arraigned Friday on an assault and battery count and was released on personal recognizance.

Prosecutors allege there were concerns of financial exploitation. Court documents show Birnbaum has an estate valued at about $2.5 million and that Collignon recently tried to take over power of attorney duties.

But Collignon said he loves her and was only concerned about her care. His next court date is June 14.
