The Ultimate Grill-Fest

SEARCY — The Ultimate Grill-Fest: Hamburgers for Homelessness will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Berryhill Park to benefit Jacob’s Place Homeless Mission. There will be kids’ activities and music by Jason Truby and Jay & the Twilighters. The suggested minimum donation for admission is $5, which includes a hamburger, chips, a drink and ice cream. Festival Street Market

SALEM — The 67th annual Fulton County Homecoming Festival will be both days in Salem. Festival organizers are accepting vendors for the Festival Street Market. Rental fees are $75 for Friday night and Saturday, or $40 for Saturday only, plus $10 for electricity. Homecoming Festival 5K Race

SALEM — The 2016 Bank of Salem Mark Thomas Memorial Apple Pie 5K Run will begin at 8 a.m. Online registration is available at www.register-wizard.com/events/applepierun/register. FNBC/Horseshoe Bend Fire Truck Open

HORSESHOE BEND — The Horseshoe Bend Volunteer Fire and Rescue will have its fourth annual FNBC/Horseshoe Bend Fire Truck Open at the Turkey Mountain Golf Course. The tournament will be a three-person scramble with an entry fee of $120 per team. There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m., preceded by coffee and doughnuts at 8 a.m. Golf carts are not included in the entry fee but will be available with advance reservations. Summer Reading Program and Story Hour

BATESVILLE — Registration for the Independence County Library’s Summer Reading Program, for preschoolers to sixth-graders. begins June 1. Register at the library, 368 E. Main St. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a prize every week for reading books. Those who complete the program will receive a certificate and a grand prize. Ms. Charlotte’s Story Hour will take place each Wednesday, June 8 through July 27, at 10 a.m. for preschoolers and at 2 p.m. for grade-school children, with stories, videos, crafts and live performances. Fulton County Fair Booth Rental

SALEM — The Fulton County Fair Association is accepting reservations for commercial booth space for the 2016 county fair. Booths will set up in the new Salem Civic Center from 2-5 p.m. July 25 and remain in place until 7 p.m. July 30. Inside booths are 10-by-10 feet for $60, plus $5 for electricity. ASUN Summer Hours

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport’s hours of operation have shifted to its summer schedule: ASUN’s campuses in Newport, Jonesboro and Marked Tree will be open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, through Aug. 11. With the exception of White River Hall on the Newport campus, all ASUN offices and locations will be closed Fridays. Events that are already set to take place on Fridays during the summer will go on as scheduled. ASUN will resume normal operating hours Aug. 15.

Single Parent Scholarship Application Deadline

SEARCY — The deadline for applying for White County Single Parent Scholarship Fund Inc. summer 2016 scholarships is June 1. WCSPSF Inc. awards scholarships to White County single parents who have minor children and are pursuing postsecondary education in order to achieve skilled employment. First Responder Course

BATESVILLE — A First Responder course will be offered from 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 31 through June 30, in Room 926 of the Nursing Allied Health Building at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. The fee is $125, plus a textbook. First Responder teaches students emergency care for trauma patients, splinting techniques, bleeding control, rescue procedures, how to prepare a patient for transport and stabilization of a patient. Library Summer Celebration

BATESVILLE — To celebrate summer, the Independence County Library, 368 E. Main St., is offering lots of new books, DVDs, audio books, graphic novels and new programs. EMT Instructor Course

BATESVILLE — The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville will offer an EMT instructor course to introduce the experienced EMT to the teaching aspects of EMS, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13-17. The program includes lectures and student demonstrations to practice teaching skills. The course fee is $185, plus the cost of a textbook. Summer Reading Camp

BATESVILLE — Registration is open for Get in the Game … Read! — the Ozark Foothills Literacy Project’s 2016 Summer Reading Camp for children entering first through sixth grades. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. to noon June 6-9 at the Fellowship Bible Church (formerly Landers Theater), 156 S. Third St. The camp will offer engaging reading and writing activities with a focus on stories related to competition, physical activity and sports heroes. Lifeguard Classes

JACKSONVILLE — Lifeguard classes will be offered at the Jacksonville Community Center. Participants must pass a pre-test and be at least 15 years old. Cabot Lions Club Meetings

CABOT — The Cabot Lions Club has regular get-togethers at noon the first and third Thursdays of the month at the KingPin Sports Grill. Lions serve local communities and protect the planet. Club members provide children with eyeglasses, offer food for seniors and are among the first to respond when disaster strikes. All are invited to attend the meetings.

Music in the Mall

FAIRFIELD BAY — Music in the Mall, featuring local and drop-in performers, will take place from 6-9 p.m. the first, second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the Education Center Gazebo in the Village Mall. Summer Bridge Program

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport will offer a Summer Bridge program May 31 through June 29 for high school students who want to earn four hours of college credit. BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Arts Council will host its annual Summer Celebration … Lights, Camera, Party!, a fundraiser for the arts, June 4 at the Barnett Building, 267 E. Main St. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The event’s “red carpet” theme will include prizes for the best-dressed “actor” and “actress.” There will be a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, dessert, drinks, raffle prizes and live music by Danny Dozier, Sarah Roark and John Parks. Outdoor and ACT Prep Camp

BATESVILLE — Lyon College will host its annual Outdoor and ACT Prep Camp for rising high school juniors and seniors June 5-8. The event will offer a taste of the Lyon Education and Adventure Program (LEAP) and specialized ACT instruction from Stephen Leake, president of College Prep Coach Inc. Outdoor activities will include slacklining, bouldering, kayak polo, ultimate frisbee and a slip-n-slide. NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport will offer two “Get a Clue” camps this summer for Jackson County youth. The camps, based on the board game Clue, will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in Walton Hall at ASUN, on June 13-16 for students entering third through sixth grades, and July 11-14 for students entering seventh through ninth grades.
