Man dies after being thrown from pickup in Arkansas crash

A Louisiana man died after being ejected from his pickup in a two-vehicle crash in Sevier County on Tuesday, according to Arkansas State Police.

The crash happened when James M. Eakin, 58, of Vivian, La., failed to come to a stop about 3:10 p.m. at an intersection while traveling west on Arkansas 27 at U.S. 71, authorities said in a preliminary report.

Eakin’s 2000 Toyota Tundra then struck a 2007 GMC Envoy that was traveling south on U.S. 71, continued west and hit a tree, causing Eakin to be thrown from his pickup, according to state police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:54 p.m. Tuesday by Sevier County Coroner Rusty Williams.

The driver of the GMC, 51-year-old Lori A. Davis of Ashdown, was injured and transported to a local hospital, authorities said. Her exact condition was not known as of Wednesday afternoon.

Travel conditions at the time of the crash were clear and dry, state police said.

Eakin’s death was the 190th reported so far this year by state police on an Arkansas road, according to preliminary figures.
