UALR falls in Sun Belt tournament

The UALR baseball team entered the Sun Belt Conference tournament as its highest seed ever but now face elimination after the tournament's first game.

No. 6 seed Georgia Southern scored four runs in the second inning to take a lead, then answered a UALR rally with two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth of a 13-4 victory at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas. The third-seeded Trojans will play either No. 2 South Alabama or No. 7 Texas-Arlington in a 9 a.m. elimination game Thursday.

The Trojans' issues Wednesday were the same as they've had all year: Pitching. Starter Matt McDowell gave up 8 runs, 6 earned, on 7 hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Reliever Keenan Wingfield gave up two in 2/3 of an inning and Dylan Slayton gave up 3 in 3 innings pitched.

Georgia Southern (34-23) had 15 hits, 12 of which were singles. Four different players had three hits apiece for the Eagles, while Logan Baldwin, Jordan Wren and Hunter Thomas each had two RBI.

Zach Baker went 3-for-4 with an RBI for UALR (26-27), while Ty Gunter, Kyle Kirk, and Hunter Owens each drove in runs, too. Ryan Scott, named Tuesday as the Sun Belt's player of the year, went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
