4:55 P.M. UPDATE:

The National Weather Service in North Little Rock has issued a flash flood warning for three Arkansas counties.

Those counties with warnings in effect until 7:45 p.m. Thursday are Jackson, White and Woodruff.

Up to 3 inches of rain has already fallen in the area, according to the weather service.

EARLIER:

Scattered strong thunderstorms are likely as rainfall continues in portions of Arkansas on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain, heavy at times, had begun to move through the Little Rock area shortly before 4 p.m.

Forecasters said the primary threats associated with the system are potentially damaging winds that could exceed 60 mph, hail up to golf-ball size and frequent lightning.

“Cool, dry air aloft over warm, humid air near the surface will support strong storms this afternoon and evening across much of Arkansas,” the weather service said.

Portions of northern and eastern Arkansas are in the highest probability for rainfall, though western areas of the state face the greatest risk for severe weather, according to forecasters.

That part of the state is in a slight risk for severe weather, while most of the state remains in the marginal threat category.
