Accidents in state kill five, state police report

Three people died in traffic crashes across Arkansas this week and a fourth was killed in a driveway, according to Arkansas State Police preliminary reports.

In addition, state police reported this week the death of a North Carolina man in a May 19 crash in El Dorado.

Jerrod Leisure, 22, of Walnut Ridge died Tuesday after his car crossed the centerline on Arkansas 135 south of Oak Grove in Greene County. Leisure collided head-on with a northbound vehicle driven by William Chambers. Chambers and Leisure's passenger, Brandy Nolen, also suffered injuries in the crash.

Also on Tuesday, a Louisiana man was killed in a car crash at the intersection of U.S. 71 and Arkansas 27 in Sevier County. James Eakin, 58, of Vivian, La., was traveling west on Arkansas 27 when he failed to stop at an intersection and hit another vehicle, according to a state police report. Eakin's vehicle continued west and hit a tree, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

The other driver, Lori Davis of Ashdown, was injured in the crash and taken to Little River Memorial Hospital.

An unnamed girl who was in the front yard of a house on Willella Place in Springdale died Tuesday when she was struck by a vehicle backing out of the driveway, according to a preliminary report. State police do not release the names of minors killed in traffic crashes.

On Wednesday, a single-car crash killed an 84-year-old Prairie Grove woman. Shirley Stewart was northbound on Viney Grove Road in Washington County when she failed to make a left turn, according to state police. She left the roadway and struck a ditch followed by a concrete fence.

State police reported Wednesday that Emmanuel Pickett, 20, of Fayetteville, N.C., was killed when he crashed his motorcycle on North M.L.K. Boulevard in El Dorado last week. Pickett was southbound when his motorcycle struck a Chevrolet truck, ejecting him from the motorcycle, according to state police.
