Migratory birds postpone Arkansas bridge demolition

POCAHONTAS — The demolition of a historic bridge in Pocahontas has been postponed because migratory birds have nested at the site.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that the dismantling of the Black River Bridge, a historically registered landmark, was scheduled for July. But state regulations prevent the demolition of a structure that migratory birds have nested in.

Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tim Scott said the birds were discovered shortly after a bid for the demolition was accepted March 23.

Alan Walter, a district construction engineer with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, said in March that the department would do everything possible to avoid allowing nesting birds to delay the project significantly.
