UCA given papers of late labor leader

CONWAY -- The family of late labor leader J. Bill Becker has donated his papers to the University of Central Arkansas Archives.

Becker, who died in December 1997, was president of the Arkansas AFL-CIO from 1964 to 1996.

Becker's papers include books, newspaper articles and editorials, personal notes, professional correspondence, personal information and photographs, said Jimmy Bryant, director of the UCA Archives.

"Mr. Becker was a very powerful labor leader and had significant political clout," Bryant said in a statement released by UCA. "Politicians viewed his endorsement as being critically important to their campaigns."

Bryant said he hopes the Becker papers will be processed and ready for researchers by early next year.
