Road work to shut Interstate 49 lanes

Construction on Interstate 49 in Johnson and Springdale will require overnight lane closures for three days next week beginning Tuesday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews overlaying the existing roadway between Johnson Mill Boulevard and U.S. 412 will require the northbound and southbound lanes to be alternately closed nightly through Friday, weather permitting.

The northbound lane closures will take place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. while the southbound lane closures will occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

The work was originally scheduled this week, but postponed because of weather, the department said.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen to six lanes from four a 4.5-mile section of I-49 between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete later this year, the department said.
