Cleveland stresses GOP event security

CLEVELAND — City officials plan to present on Tuesday an overview of security preparation for this summer’s Republican National Convention, seeking to counter concerns about Cleveland’s readiness to host an event that’s expected to draw 50,000 visitors.

A new release from Mayor Frank Jackson’s office said Tuesday’s session will cover issues including public safety, medical services and emergency management. The release stated that “despite rumors” to the contrary, Cleveland police are on track with preparedness goals and are continuing to sign agreements with outside agencies for assistance.

The announcement Friday came after the Greensboro, N.C., Police Department rescinded its offer to send 50 officers to the convention, citing concerns about insurance coverage and Cleveland’s preparations for the July convention.
