HEART FOR THE HUNGRY

Empty bowls runneth over with silent and live auctions

Although Empty Bowls has been an annual event for the Arkansas Food Bank for 14 years, this year the Food Bank selected its first honoree, Nick Brown, president and chief executive of Southwestern Powerpool. He was honored at the fundraiser May 13 at the Statehouse Convention Center.

"He truly has a heart for those who are hungry," said food bank chief executive Rhonda Sanders when introducing Brown.

She said Southwest Powerpool holds a summer cereal drive, and every year it gets bigger and better. The company donated more than 30,000 boxes of cereal to the Food Bank last year.

Brown said, "The real credit goes to each and every employee."

The event included a buffet stocked by local restaurants; a silent auction filled with empty bowls made by local artists and some signed by celebrities; and a live auction that included a custom glass chandelier by James Hayes and an original painting by Virginia McKimmey.

Dr. Christi and Dustin Smith served as event co-chairmen.
