STRUTTIN' FOR PUPS

CARE event raises $40,000 to provide homes for pets

A parade of 24 rescued pups strutted -- or were carried -- down the catwalk at CARE's ninth annual Paws on the Runway on May 12 at Next Level Events.

The dogs were either adoptable or adopted from CARE. They came in various shapes, sizes, colors and ages, but they were all friendly, most stopping to be petted by partygoers as they and their human handlers finished their runway walk. The dog walkers included radio and television personalities, local philanthropists, politicians and popular chefs.

During a cocktail hour, guests enjoyed buffets of finger foods and drinks and bid on silent auction items, many of them dog-themed. A live auction catered to animal lovers with items including pet portraits and a chance to walk in next year's show.

About 270 guests attended the fundraiser, which raised more than $40,000 for CARE, an animal rescue organization that provides medical care and places animals facing euthanasia into foster or permanent homes. The money raised, said executive director Ashley Young, will be used to rescue and re-home more cats and dogs in need. "We will also continue to promote our low-cost spay/neuter program," she added.
