Police were called at 6:42 p.m. to a burglary in progress and found a woman in her 60s dead when they entered the house, police Lt. Steven McClanahan said. A neighbor had made the call to police.

The cause and time of death were unknown Saturday night, but the death is being investigated as Little Rock's 12th homicide of the year, McClanahan said.

"We do have some leads that we are following up on," McClanahan said. "And at least we are pointed in the right direction, so hopefully we will have something concrete."

Debra Finley, who lives next door to the victim, said the woman lived alone and was a loving and caring individual.

"She really cared about the neighborhood," Finley said.

Finley -- looking at the Police Department's 12th Street station, visible from 11th Street -- wondered why the police weren't able to stop the homicide.

She has lived on the street for 10 years and said the violence in the neighborhood has to stop, and the death of her next-door neighbor is too close for comfort.

"What the hell is going on in this neighborhood?" Finley said.

McClanahan said community engagement and involvement are important in solving such crimes.

"We can't solve crimes by ourselves as police," he said.
