AHEAD OF THE WINDFALL

Partygoers get Windfall, meet Alexander, Pietsch

Jennifer and Mark McCarty opened their west Little Rock home to patrons of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre for An Evening with Jason Alexander and Scooter Pietsch. The pair are the director and playwright for the forthcoming world premiere of Windfall, the last show of the Rep's 40th anniversary season.

After a reception, where guests could visit with the VIPs, the two sat down in the living room with artistic director Bob Hupp as guests gathered around to hear some remarks on the show followed by a question and answer session.

"Greed has always been a fascinating subject to me. I love to put people in circumstances where anybody could be despicable," Pietsch explained before giving a brief synopsis of the play about four co-workers who spend all they have on a lottery ticket and what happens after they win.

The goal, he said, was to have theatergoers discuss if they believe whether it could happen, or whether they could become those people.

Alexander said he was grateful not only to Hupp and the Rep but also to the community for being "as interested as you are in this."

He explained how difficult it is in the world of theater to put up new works. "New York, considered the mecca of American theater, should really be considered the mecca of commercial American theater. It's a real testament to [Hupp] to allow us to do this here."

He said Pietsch's play is interesting, very theatrical and very funny in a dark sense. "I think this is going to be the first stop of many stops," Alexander added.

The play runs June 10-26.
