PASSING THE STETHOSCOPE

UAMS radiology welcomes 'Bobette,' mentor's trainee

A recent reception for Dr. Gwendolyn Bryant-Smith, the new chief of breast imaging for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' department of radiology, was sort of a passing of the stethoscope to Bryant-Smith from her mentor and predecessor, Dr. Bobby Fincher.

In fact, Dr. James McDonald, the department's interim chairman, joked that Bryant-Smith should be deemed "Bobette."

Dr. Peter Emanuel, director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at UAMS, said Bryant-Smith was selected as chief following a national search using a consulting firm. She was personally trained by Fincher at UAMS. He retired last year.

"Thank you for being a mentor," Bryan-Smith told a blushing Fincher. "I'm going to work hard to carry on your legacy and build upon it." She was accompanied at the reception by her husband, Derrick Smith.

Bryant-Smith joined the UAMS faculty in 2006 and served as director of breast imaging in the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System's Department of Radiology/Imaging and Therapeutic Service from August 2008 until accepting her new post.
