1-vehicle crashes fatal to 4 in state

Four Arkansans died over the weekend in single-vehicle accidents, authorities said.

A pedestrian was killed in Hot Springs after a driver lost control of her car at Central Avenue and Hobson Avenue on Saturday, according to the Hot Springs Police Department.

Michael Wicker of Hardy was struck while standing on the sidewalk about 4 p.m. after Sharkeetrya Dunwood of Hot Springs lost control of her Chevrolet Aveo, police said. Dunwood also crashed into the Continental Motel, which caused her car to spin clockwise and overturn, according to a department news release.

Wicker, whose age wasn't released, died after being rushed to a local hospital.

It wasn't clear on Sunday whether Dunwood would face any charges.

Christopher J. Myers, 38, of Russellville died in a crash Saturday night that injured two others in Yell County, according to Arkansas State Police.

Myers veered off Arkansas 27 while driving north and struck a driveway. The pickup truck overturned and ejected Myers, the report said.

Sondra Combs, 42, of Dardanelle and Matthew Combs, 28, of Dover were injured in the wreck, police said.

The driving conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash.

Shirley Cooper, 73, of Hope died on Saturday afternoon when a tire on the car she was riding in blew out, causing the driver to lose control, according to a police report.

The blowout occurred at about 4:05 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 30 westbound in Hot Spring County. The car left the road, rolled and struck several trees, the report said.

Edward Cooper, 79, of Hope was injured in the wreck.

The driving conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash, police said.

Billy Eugene Varela, 27, of Batesville died early Sunday morning after he lost control of his motorcycle in a turn on Arkansas 25 in Independence County, according to a police report.

Varela's bike overturned in a ditch and struck an embankment, the report said.
