Williams Baptist wins to stay alive

Williams Baptist kept its season alive with a 10-4 victory over Webber (Fla.) International (Fla.) in a losers bracket game Monday at the NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa.

Williams Baptist (40-20) will meet Oklahoma City (62-3) in another elimination game at 1 p.m. today.

Leading 5-4 going into the sixth inning, Williams Baptist scored five runs to break the game open. Brooke Mason led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Leslie Garza. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrea Drake and scored on Ashley Lyons' double to make it 6-4. Haley Hambrick followed with a double down the left-field line to score pinch runner Alexis Ingram to make it 7-4.

After Webber pitcher Erika Bellinger was replaced by Melanie Murphy, pinch hitter Molleigh Gray hit a three-run home run to right-center field to make it 10-4.

"I was so happy because it was such a team win and everyone picks up everyone and depends on everyone on this team," Gray said.

"Our sixth inning was big for us," Williams Baptist Coach Laura Tucker said. "We had a lot of people get in the game and contribute, capped off by Molleigh's three-run homer. Yesterday, Molleigh struck out and she bounced back today with a big three-run homer, so today was exciting for her."

In the bottom of the sixth, Williams Baptist pitcher Rylee Rogers (26-10) set down Webber International in order. After allowing a lead-off walk in the seventh, Catherine Totty finished the game.

Williams Baptist, which led 5-1 through the first two innings, saw its lead close to 5-4 in the third on Webber International's Megan Isoba three-run home run.

Williams Baptist took a 2-0 lead in the first on Callie Brooks' two-run home run. Webber closed to 2-1 on Alyssa Householder's home run.

In the second inning, Williams Baptist made it 5-1. Madelyn Poe's infield single scored Lyons to make it 3-1. Haley Hambrick then scored when Susannah Pugh reached on an error.
