NEW YORK -- The Jets' backfield was in serious motion Tuesday, with former Arkansas Razorback Knile Davis coming -- and then going -- and C.J. Spiller set to head to New York.

Just a few hours after claiming Davis off waivers from the Green Bay Packers to bolster their running backs spot, the Jets reached an agreement with Spiller, a person with direct knowledge of the team's plans told The Associated Press.

Davis will be waived when the Jets sign Spiller today, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced its plans.

The person told the AP that New York was in discussions earlier Tuesday to sign Spiller, but had not received a firm commitment. So, the Jets claimed Davis as insurance -- a couple of hours before reaching an agreement with Spiller.

NFL Network first reported the Jets' intentions to sign Spiller.

Spiller was released by Seattle last Wednesday after being signed on Sept. 28. The one-time Pro Bowl selection caught an 8-yard touchdown pass in his first game with the Seahawks against the Jets on Oct. 2. He had just three carries for 9 yards and had five receptions for 43 yards with Seattle.

He'll be reunited with Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who coached Spiller during some of his best seasons in Buffalo. In 2012, Spiller ran for a career-high 1,244 yards and six touchdowns, and also set a personal best with 43 receptions for 459 yards and two TDs.

Spiller, 29, joins a Jets backfield that includes Matt Forte and Bilal Powell. New York's running game ranks 16th in the NFL, with Forte ninth in the league with 542 yards rushing.

The speedy Spiller, a 2010 first-round pick out of Clemson, has rushed for 3,442 yards and 12 touchdowns, and caught 197 passes for 1,477 yards and nine TDs in seven seasons with Buffalo, New Orleans and Seattle.

The Jets' decision marks a strange turn of events for Davis, who will be looking for his fourth team in a span of just a few weeks.

Davis was acquired by Green Bay from Kansas City on Oct. 18 for a conditional draft choice. He had five carries for 5 yards in two games with the Packers before being waived Monday.

The Jets waived running back Troymaine Pope to make room on the roster for Davis. Pope had 1 yard on his only carry for New York, which signed him off waivers from Seattle on Sept. 4.

Davis, a third-round draft pick out of Arkansas in 2013, has rushed for 780 yards and 11 touchdowns, and caught 33 passes for 264 yards and a TD in four seasons. In six games with the Chiefs and Packers this season, he had 3 yards on 6 carries, with 4 catches for 18 yards.

LIONS

DE Bryant suspended

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions defensive end Armonty Bryant has been suspended three games for violating the NFL's policy on substances of abuse.

Detroit signed Bryant last month. He was cut by Cleveland at the end of a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The Lions said that when they signed him, they knew he might face additional discipline because of an incident that occurred last year. The team said Bryant has met expectations on and off the field since joining the Lions.

Detroit also announced Tuesday that it has signed tight end Matthew Mulligan and acquired cornerback Johnthan Banks in a trade with Tampa Bay. The Lions sent a 2018 conditional seventh-round draft pick to the Buccaneers.

Detroit also placed tight end Cole Wick (knee) on injured reserve.

BILLS

Percy Harvin returns

Percy Harvin, the mercurial, oft-injured wideout and kickoff-return specialist who was thought to be retired, signed with the Buffalo Bills for the rest of the season, agent Greg Barnett said Tuesday via Twitter.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Harvin will be paid $1 million for the final eight games of the season.

Harvin must still pass a physical, The Associated Press reports. If healthy, he could immediately come to the aid of a Bills team that's been beset by injuries to its wide receivers.

Three of the team's top four wideouts missed Sunday's loss to the Patriots, and backup Brandon Tate left that game with a possible concussion.

STEELERS

Roethlisberger may play

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't ruled out quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returning for Sunday's game in Baltimore.

Coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday he'll see how Roethlisberger's left knee responds during practice before making any sort of decision between Roethlisberger and backup Landry Jones.

Roethlisberger tore cartilage in his knee during a loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 16. He underwent surgery the next day and sat out a 27-16 loss to the New England Patriots. Roethlisberger practiced a bit on Monday, with Tomlin calling it "generally positive."

The Steelers (4-3) are also hopeful defensive end Cam Heyward, right tackle Marcus Gilbert and running back DeAngelo Williams will also have a chance to play in Baltimore (3-4).

EAGLES

WR arrested with gun, pot

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Josh Huff was stopped on the Walt Whitman Bridge on Tuesday morning after he was caught allegedly speeding.

Huff was reportedly arrested after he was found in possession of marijuana and a gun, sources told CBS3. The TV news station said it's not known if Huff has a permit to carry a gun.

Huff, 25, was stopped on the New Jersey side of the bridge.

No further details were immediately available.

The Eagles, in a statement, said: "We are aware of the incident today involving Josh Huff. At this point, we are gathering more information."

Huff, a native of Houston, Texas, was a third-round draft pick of the Eagles in 2014. Before the Eagles, he played college football at the University of Oregon, where he was one of the most productive receivers, the Eagles' website says. He finished his career at Oregon tied for first all-time with 24 touchdowns, seventh in receiving yards (2,366) and eighth in receptions (144).

In 2014, while playing for the Eagles, he "burst onto the scene as a special teams standout for the Birds during his rookie campaign, setting a franchise record with his 107-yard kickoff return for a score" against Tennessee, the Eagles website says.

His bio on the Eagles website says he and his wife have a son.

CARDINALS

Source: Call in question

TEMPE, Ariz. -- A person with knowledge of the NFL's handling of the matter told The Associated Press that a replay malfunction prevented a review of a fumble that resulted in the Carolina Panthers' first touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

The person said the call would have been overturned to an incomplete pass had the equipment been working. This backs up the account given Monday by Cardinals Coach Bruce Arians.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not publicly discussed the matter.

The play early in the game set the tone for what became a dominant 30-20 Carolina victory.

All touchdowns are supposed to be reviewed, but after Carolina's Thomas Davis picked up the ball and ran 46 yards for a score there was no way to review it. The conversion kick came quickly and the call stood.

REDSKINS

OT Williams suspended

Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams was suspended four games Tuesday for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

It's his second four-game suspension and first since 2011. He tested positive for marijuana multiple times over the summer of 2011 and served it that season.

Williams will miss Washington's games against the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. He's eligible to return to the team Dec. 5.

The four-time Pro Bowl left tackle has missed only three games dating to 2012. His propensity to battle through injuries has drawn rave reviews from teammates and Coach Jay Gruden.

Williams has been an offensive captain for Washington since 2011 and is one of the most respected players in the locker room.

-- Democrat-Gazette Press Services With Williams out, Ty Nsekhe is expected to move into the starting left tackle spot. Nsekhe started two games for the Redskins (4-3-1) last season.

DOLPHINS

S Jones out for season

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones considered shoulder surgery last offseason but decided against it, and now he's out for the season after aggravating his injury.

"My shoulder has been messed up for about two years," Jones said Tuesday. "It was pretty painful, but I played through it."

Jones had been playing with a torn labrum and thought he could continue despite the injury. But when he tore the rotator cuff in Week 6, surgery became mandatory.

He acknowledged he could have fixed the problem last offseason without missing any games.

"I should have," he said, "but I can't look back now."

Jones said he expects to be 100 percent in four months, meaning he should be available for offseason practices in early 2017.
