Wynne steamrolls Morrilton with 36-point second half

WYNNE -- Wynne turned a 14-14 halftime tie into a 50-21 rout of Morrilton in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday.

Wynne outgained Morrilton 458-323 for the game, and the Yellowjackets outscored the Devil Dogs 36-7 in the second half and 43-7 over the final three quarters after trailing 14-7.

Junior quarterback Luke Chapman rushed for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns; Ta'Von Hicks added 151 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.

"We came out the second half, held them to a three and out and our offense scored," Wynne Coach Chris Hill said after the game. "That was the turning point in the game."

Wynne (11-0) outscored the Devil Dogs 21-0 in the third quarter to open a 35-14 lead.

Wynne's first score came after forcing Morrilton (5-6) to punt to open the second half.

Chapman scored his first of two touchdowns in the quarter on a 48-yard rush up the middle on third and 6 to give the Yellowjackets a 21-14 lead less than three minutes into the quarter.

Chapman's other score came on Wynne's next possession when he scored on a 2-yard quarterback keeper to put Wynne ahead by 27-14, after the failed extra point.

Mason Burnett's 5-yard run put the Yellowjackets ahead 35-14 after Chapman's conversion rush with under a minute in the quarter.

Morrilton's four drives in the quarter ended with two punts, a turnover on downs and an interceptions thrown by Canady.

Wynne continued its onslaught when Allen Watson added a 13-yard touchdown reception on fourth down in the back corner of the end zone with 9:09 to play. Burnett's two-point conversion run made it 43-14.

Morrilton quarterback Caleb Canady countered with his third touchdown pass to Deiontae Duncan, from 55 yards, to make the score 43-21 with eight minutes to play.

Chapman's third touchdown, a 1-yard run with 2:26 to play, made it 50-21.

Wynne scored on its first offensive play of the game when Devontai Pounds ran 47 yards up the Morrilton sideline with 11:36 remaining in the first quarter, but Morrilton took a 14-7 lead on passes of 32 and 11 from Canady Duncan.

Wynne tied the game 14-14 on Hicks' 41-yard touchdown on first down that featured several spin moves and a stop-and-go with 9:43 left in the first half.

Morrilton outgained Wynne 205-188 in the half. The Devil Dogs finished the first half with 159 pass and 45 rushing, while Wynne accumulated 168 on the ground and 20 passing on 1 completion.
