UAMS students set free health checks

Free health screenings will be provided Monday by students from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in recognition of World Diabetes Day.

Anyone interested in a screening can go to the Firehouse Hostel and Museum at 1201 Commerce St. between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The students will provide blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index screenings, as well as immunization counseling.

Landscape design subject of lecture

The head of the landscape architecture department at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville will speak Tuesday about how population increases, climate change and new professional practices can change the role of designers.

Ken McCown will present November's Architecture and Design Network lecture at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Arkansas Arts Center Lecture Hall, 501 E. Ninth St.

"He'll use examples of collaborative works with professionals, students and faculty where they explore the role of designers as placed-based integrative specialists to discuss and examine how they can increase the impact of design in communities," a news release said.

There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. before the free lecture.

Workshop free on single-parent aid

The Single Parent Scholarship Fund Pulaski County will host a free informational session on its scholarships Tuesday.

The event is at 11:30 a.m. at Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, 7400 Scott Hamilton Drive, Suite 50 in the community room.

BET founder to talk at chamber meeting

The founder of Black Entertainment Television will headline the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting Friday.

It will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Governor's Hall IV at the Statehouse Convention Center, 101 E. Markham St.

Robert Johnson founded BET and RLJ Companies. He was named one of the 25 Most Influential Business Leaders of the Past 25 Years by USA Today.

In 1991, Johnson took BET public, making the network the first black-owned company to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. He sold the company to Viacom in 2001 for about $3 billion and remained the chief executive officer until 2006.

Film, talk to focus on realities of war

A new film, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, will be shown before a short discussion Thursday at the Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema, 2600 Cantrell Road.

The Central Arkansas Library System is hosting the free event as part of its Fiction & Fact: A War Dialogue with Veterans project.

The film follows 19-year-old Lynn after he returns home for a victory tour after a battle in Iraq.

"The film shows what really happened to his squad, contrasting the realities of war with America's perceptions," a news release said.

Partnerships sought for Clinton School

The Clinton School of Public Service is hosting an informational session Friday for entities working on social change that are interested in becoming field service partners of the school.

The session will cover different types of student projects and how to apply.

It's set for 10-11 a.m. at the school, Sturgis Hall, 1200 President Clinton Ave.

Practicum projects are selected by the school and completed by small teams of students in the course of completing their degrees. They are meant to be valuable to partner organizations.

Applications from organizations are due by March 18.

Fire-extinguisher classes scheduled

The Fire Department is hosting fire-extinguisher training classes Saturday, and giving each participant a free extinguisher.

There will be two classes at the department's training facility at 7000 Murray St. -- one from 10 a.m. to noon and another from 1-3 p.m. Each class is limited to 25 participants, to be filled on a first-come basis.

The extinguishers are provided by the Arkansas Fire Prevention Commission Fire Prevention Grant.

Those who wish to participate can call (501) 918-3710 to reserve a spot.
