SILENT SUNDAY

Voices from the heart

40 local restaurants feed crowd that raises $50,000 for School for the Deaf

Burgers? Tacos? Barbecue? Catfish and hush-puppies? Guests at Silent Sunday, a fundraiser for Arkansas School for the Deaf, had their pick of all of it at the Nov. 6 event at the Statehouse Convention Center. About 40 restaurants participated.

While dining and bidding on silent auction items, the crowd was entertained by music from The Groanups. The affair also included a patriotic presentation by the school's young ambassadors, the Singing Fingers, dressed in red, white and blue costumes and performing to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "God Bless the USA."

Volunteering for the event were members of University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, who wore "hunky helpers" T-shirts, and members of UALR and Arkansas Tech University's Delta Zeta sororities. Janelle Lilley and Todd Yakoubian were masters of ceremonies.

The fundraiser for the Arkansas School for the Deaf was sponsored by the Central Arkansas Independent Restaurant Operators. About 1,000 guests helped raise about $50,000 for the school's technology programs. Event co-chairmen were Stacey Tatera and Lynn Brooks.
