Police are investigating after a man was shot Thursday afternoon in North Little Rock.

Officers were called about 3:24 p.m. to Silver City Courts apartment complex at 701 W. 18th St., east of Pike Avenue. They found a wounded Derrick Cates, 30, lying on the ground.

Cates was taken to UAMS Medical Center. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police spokesman Carmen Helton said Cates was alert after the shooting and was speaking to investigators. She said she did not have further information on the case.

No arrests had been made late Thursday.

Ex-pharmacy tech accused of pill theft

A former pharmacist technician at a Little Rock hospital is accused of entering a code-locked room at the hospital Wednesday and stealing pain medication.

A security guard at Baptist Health Medical Center told Little Rock police that he was locking a door on the third floor of the hospital when an employee alerted him to Josiah Clowers, 26, of Bryant leaving a secured room around 6 a.m., a police report said

After seeing the guard, Clowers reportedly ran down a stairway, initiating a chase that ended shortly after with the guard grabbing Clowers, according to the report.

Clowers resisted before he was handcuffed and patted down, the guard told authorities.

Authorities reported finding two packets containing the pain medication fentanyl in Clowers' right pants pocket, the report notes.

Clowers' booking photo shows him in light blue scrubs, a white V-neck T-shirt and a navy hooded jacket.

The guard told police that he was previously advised that Clowers was not welcome at the hospital.

Records show Clowers remained at the Pulaski County jail as of Thursday afternoon on charges of commercial burglary and criminal attempt.

Woman says beau knife-waving robber

A knife-wielding man threatened to cut a woman described as his girlfriend and mother of his child during a robbery Wednesday in Little Rock, according to authorities.

Police responded around 11 a.m. to a report of an aggravated robbery in the 1700 block of East 19th Street, according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

The 26-year-old victim told a responding officer that she and a North Little Rock man, also 26, got into an argument after he withdrew money from her checking account at an ATM.

The boyfriend grabbed a large knife from a kitchen and held it to her body and demanded more money, prompting her to grab her cellphone and call 911, the report noted.

The victim told police that during a struggle she was hit repeatedly on the left arm with "some type of strap."

The report noted that the boyfriend took the cellphone and put it in his back pocket before brandishing the knife again in a second demand for money.

Police said the boyfriend searched her bedroom and found money in a black bag that fell from a closet shelf.

The girlfriend said she grabbed the keys to her silver 2006 Chevrolet Aveo in an attempt to leave but was stopped at the car by the man, who demanded that she give him a ride home, the report said.

After giving the man a ride home, the woman said, her boyfriend returned her cellphone.

Authorities said $840 was taken from the woman.

A suspect was listed in the report, though his his name did not appear in jail records as of Thursday afternoon.

Assailant rummages pocket, takes cash

A Little Rock man said an assailant pulled out a gun, threatened to shoot him and took cash from his front pocket outside a liquor store Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The 44-year-old man told authorities he was near Osage Liquor at 3281 Asher Ave. around 1:50 p.m. when a man approached.

The stranger demanded his possessions, and when the victim said he had nothing on him, the assailant responded he would "strip him naked if he had to," the man told police.

The attacker then said, "Dude, I got a gun. I will shoot you," and he pulled out a silver handgun from behind his back, reached into the victim's right front pocket and took his cash, according to a police report.

Then, as passing cars started to honk, the assailant ran away and got into a white 1991 Buick Regal and headed west on Asher Avenue, the victim said.

The robber was described as black, 52 to 54 years old and weighing about 250 pounds.

Police said a search of the area did not turn up the robber or the getaway car.

Early-riser gunman grabs wallet in LR

A Little Rock woman said she was robbed at gunpoint while getting into her car Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The 31-year-old told officers she was getting in her vehicle outside her home in the 10th block of Don Drive around 6:30 a.m. when a man dressed in all black pulled up in a red four-door sedan.

The robber got out of his car, displayed a silver handgun and stole her wallet before jumping back in the vehicle and driving away, she told police.

The victim described the assailant as a 6-foot-tall black man, according to a police report.

Officers said they searched for the robber and the vehicle but did not find either.
