70 AND COUNTING

Baldwin & Shell bash marks construction firm milestone

Little Rock-based Baldwin & Shell Construction Co. celebrated its 70th year in the business with a reception for about 500 of its top brass, vendors and dignitaries the night of Nov. 7 at the Clinton Presidential Center. The affair was hosted by President and Chief Executive Scott Copas and the company's board of directors.

"Our 70th-year celebration is about giving thanks to our people, the community and our clients," Copas said in a statement. He was joined at the reception by his wife, interior designer Shayla Copas, and chairman of the board Bob Shell and his wife, Ginny.

The company started in 1946 as The Baldwin Co. Shell joined in 1950, and Copas came on board in the early 1970s. The Baldwin Co. was dissolved around 1983, and Baldwin & Shell was formed.

Signs bearing the Baldwin & Shell logo have marked construction sites on everything from hospitals to office buildings, educational and religious facilities and from industrial plants to financial institutions, focusing within the state. The company also does remodeling and renovation and boasts an 85 percent repeat customers base. In addition to the Little Rock headquarters, Baldwin & Shell has offices in Jonesboro and Rogers.

For the reception, a buffet table at the entrance held a giant "70th" ice sculpture. Floral arrangements and signs played off the company's trademark red ampersand. Guests were treated to an open bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres including mini chicken and waffles, crawfish tartlets with orange jalapeno hollandaise and house-made banana and chocolate moonpies.
