Reception applauds sculptor who made UCA's new bear

CONWAY -- Sculptor Bryan Massey, creator of a 2,000-pound stainless-steel Otis the Bear sculpture, was honored at a Mayberry-theme reception Nov. 10 at the gallery Art on the Green.

Guests mingled and enjoyed tasty treats based on Massey's favorite television series -- The Andy Griffith Show. Aunt Bee and her apple pie were the inspiration for apple crumble bars, fried apple pies, caramel apples and slices of apple pie.

The 15-foot-long public sculpture, named after the often-inebriated Mayberry character Otis Campbell, hangs from the side of the new mixed-use building, Donaghey Hall, at the University of Central Arkansas. It was unveiled in October at the university's homecoming celebration. The gallery recommended Massey to the building's architects, Polk Stanley Wilcox.

A short program included remarks by the sculptor and UCA President Tom Courtway. An Apple of Our Eyes award -- a painting of an apple -- was presented to architect Patty Opitz by Massey, who noted that Polk Stanley Wilcox was "... really a joy to work with."
