Louisiana man identified as victim in fatal Arkansas hunting accident

BENTONVILLE -- Benton County sheriff's officials on Monday released the name of a Louisiana man killed Wednesday in a hunting accident near Punkin Hollow and Miller Church roads.

Capt. Ed Motsinger, head of the criminal investigation division, identified the shooting victim as Jeffery Millstead, 54, of DeRidder, La.

The accident occurred shortly after noon on Wednesday, according to Motsinger.

Millstead and his best friend, Jimmy Paul Box, hunt in the area every year, Motsinger said. Last week, Millstead was carrying a bag of corn over his shoulders and walking in front of Box, who was using his rifle to clear his way. Box's rifle accidentally discharged and a bullet struck and killed Millstead, Motsinger said.

Benton County Coroner Daniel Oxford said last week that Millstead's body would be examined by the state Crime Laboratory. Oxford said the shooting appeared to be accidental.
