3 die from injuries in wrecks on state roads

Three people have died in separate crashes on Arkansas roads.

Arkansas State Police reported Monday night that a victim of a September crash in Fort Smith has died.

In an online crash report, state police said 19-year-old Yair Garza of Fort Smith was "severely injured" at 12:21 a.m. Sept. 3 when the 1994 Honda Accord he was a passenger in left the road at the corner of Wirsing Avenue and North Albert Pike Avenue. The car hit a gas meter and several parked cars before crashing through a corner of a house.

Garza was taken to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith and later to Peachtree Hospice, where he died from his injuries. The report didn't disclose when Garza died.

Bill Sadler, a state police spokesman, said the crash occurred before a state trooper could initiate a traffic stop. The trooper had seen the Honda on a nearby road, but the driver fled from the trooper as he turned around to pursue, Sadler said.

When the trooper again located the car, it had already crashed.

The driver of the car was unhurt in the crash and wasn't listed on the report. Police listed conditions as clear and dry when the crash occurred.

A Jonesboro woman was killed and three other people were injured early Friday when a vehicle failed to stop at an intersection in northeast Arkansas, authorities say.

The accident happened at 6:22 a.m. when a westbound 1990 Ford Bronco driven by 31-year-old Robert Callahan II of Walnut Ridge ran a red light on Johnson Avenue at Main Street in Jonesboro and struck a northbound 2005 GMC Envoy.

A passenger in the Envoy, 69-year-old Geraldine Anderson, was killed in the crash, according to a state police report.

The Envoy's driver, 48-year-old Aretha Ferrell of Jonesboro, and a 17-year-old girl traveling as a passenger were hurt, the report said. Callahan was also injured.

In a news release, the Jonesboro Police Department said "there are no charges at this point."

Travel conditions at the time of the accident were described as clear and dry.

An Arkansas woman died after her car veered into a ditch and overturned in Phillips County on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Linda Hopper, 41, of Helena-West Helena was driving a 1998 Mazda Protege south on Arkansas 1 outside Lexa around 3:30 p.m., according to a state police report.

The Mazda crossed over the centerline, left the roadway and entered a ditch where the vehicle struck a culvert and overturned, police said. Hopper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Conditions were clear and dry at the time, and no one else was injured in the wreck, officials said.
