SMILES FOR MILES

Beacon of Hope illuminates Ronald McDonald House

The Beacon of Hope, a nightlight of sorts that sits on top of the new Ronald McDonald House, was lighted for the first time at the VIP Donor Preview Party on Nov. 15.

Rodney Showmar, chairman of the board of directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkansas, told the crowd the beacon was "a dynamic symbol of the house's ability to keep families close." Children staying in Arkansas Children's Hospital would be able to look out their window, see the light and know their family was nearby, he said.

Ronald McDonald and Craig O'Neill flipped a giant switch lighting the beacon to the sound of cheers from those gathered to watch.

Afterward, guests were able to tour the new five-story building which includes an indoor playroom, outdoor playground, library, media room, living room, kitchen and dining area, lounge areas and family suites.

Showmar said the new house will better serve families for years to come. The building, he noted, is a comfortable house that will serve families when it matters most.
