UAMS debut award salutes deputy state health officer

Dr. Joe Bates was honored with the inaugural Dr. Tom Bruce Arkansas Health Impact Award on Nov. 14. The award was given at a Friends of ACHI appreciation reception held in the Robinson Center Ballroom.

ACHI, part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, is the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement. The organization's mission is to be a catalyst for improving the health of Arkansans through evidence-based research, public issue advocacy and collaborative program development.

Bates and the late Dr. Bruce graduated from UAMS. Bates is currently deputy state health officer and chief science officer with the Arkansas Department of Health. Bruce was a former dean of UAMS' college of medicine.

The reception was sponsored by Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the state Health Department, Arkansas Children's Hospital and UAMS. Guests enjoyed finger foods and libations while mingling with colleagues and listening to music by Dave Williams and friends before the award presentation.
