Arkansas Open set for weekend

GOLF

Arkansas Open field about 80

About 80 players will tee off today in the 43rd annual Arkansas Open at Burns Park in North Little Rock.

There are 45 players in the open flight, 20 amateurs and 25 professionals, including defending champion and former UALR standout Patrick Sullivan.

Burns Park general manager and golf professional Steve Ralston said despite the Arkansas Razorbacks game at War Memorial Stadium this morning and the Ryder Cup this weekend, the tournament features quality players.

"There's a lot going on this time of year," Ralston said. "With football and people getting ready for hunting, we know there are other things happening, but I feel like we have a really strong field this year."

Sullivan, who finished 17th this year on the Adams Pro Tour money list, won last year's tournament by a stroke over Chris Jenkins of Little Rock. It was Sullivan's third Arkansas Open victory, having won back to back in 2008 and 2009.

"Overall, it's been a great year," Sullivan said. "I've been struggling with my driver a little, missing some fairways, but everything else is fine."

Missing from this year's tournament is four-time champion and PGA and Champions Tour veteran Glen Day of Little Rock, who is in Oxford, Miss., attending to family matters.

Others expecting to contend include Jenkins, Wes McNulty of White Hall, Stan Payne of Little Rock and Brice Howard of Hot Springs.

The tournament concludes Sunday afternoon.
