Sullivan leads Arkansas Open

Patrick Sullivan of Maumelle rode a hot putter Saturday for a 9-under 62 in the first round of the Arkansas Open at Burns Park in North Little Rock.

Sullivan, a three-time champion, made 10 birdies and had a single bogey in tying his own record he set when he won the tournament the first time in 2008. He curled in a right-to-left twister at the par-5 11th to get to 6 under, then followed that up with an 18-foot birdie at the par-4 12th. After consecutive pars on Nos. 13-16, Sullivan closed with back-to-back birdies, including a 20-footer on the 17th.

"I've been putting it pretty well this year, which has been a real bright spot," said Sullivan, who just completed the Adams Pro Tour season where he finished 17th on the money list. "I've really been striking the ball well and I feel like I have good game plan for this course."

Nick Rousey is four strokes behind Sullivan in second place after a 5-under 66. There is a trio tied for third at 5 under, while Wes McNulty of White Hall leads a group of five at 4 under.

The tournament concludes today.

First-round leader Emily Tubert (Arkansas Razorbacks) is three shots behind at 4 under after an even-par 72 on Saturday.

Tubert was 2 over after three holes but got it down to 1 under with birdies on Nos. 5, 6 and 10. Her up-and-down round continued the remainder of the back nine.

"I was really proud how I fought back," Tubert said. "It was all day birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey."

Defending champion Jackie Stoelting is tied for sixth at 1 under. Julia Roth (Central Arkansas) shot even par and is tied for 28th at 2 over.
