SEASONAL SHAKESPEARE

Shakespeare Theatre party a casting call for members

CONWAY -- Clear skies and lower temperatures reminded guests that summer is over and a new season of Shakespeare is in the works for next year. Mary Ruth Marotte, executive director of Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre, hosted the theatre's fall membership party at her home the night of Sept. 29. The theatre produces a range of Shakespeare's works around the state each summer.

Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and drinks at tables outside under a lighted pergola as they listened to classical guitarist Jean-Paul Francoeur and took in a special performance by cast members of the touring production of Twelfth Night.

Paintings and other artwork lined the walls of the host's detached garage. The art show and sale were in cooperation with Conway's ArtsFest. A portion of the sales will go toward the forthcoming Shakespeare season, which will begin June 9 with Love's Labour's Lost at the University of Central Arkansas.

Others in the season include Julius Caesar and a family adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, Marotte said. Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre occasionally includes one non-Shakespeare piece and will this year present The Music Man.

The season will close on July 9. Tickets for the 2017 season will go on sale in April.
