Colorfest to welcome 12 Ozarks artists

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Ponca Elk Education Center will hold its 12th annual Color Fest Fine Art Exhibition from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The event offers an open-air perspective of work by some of the top artists in the Ozarks.

"What better place for artists to gather inspiration than among the bugling elk and fall colors of Boxley Valley," said Mary Ann Hicks, education center director. "Everyone is welcome to join these artists, watch them work, learn their techniques and even purchase a few of their pieces. Or you can bring your own supplies and capture the amazing Ozark scenery for yourself."

Twelve artists have signed up for the event, including Grammy- and Emmy-nominated Native American flute music recording artist John Two-Hawks, who will perform at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days of the exhibition.

"We also will have wood turners, artists who use watercolors, carve gourds, fire ceramics and even an artist who spins yarn like they did centuries ago," Hicks said. "Almost all of this will take place on the education center grounds, but if an artist decides to get inspiration at the nearby Buffalo River or Boxley Valley, we'll post their location for people to visit them there."

Young artists are always welcome to the event. Special art displays where youth can try their hand at wildlife habitat art will be available.

Hicks expects hundreds of people to pass through the center during the event, as it coincides with bugling season in the area's elk herd.

She advises visitors to check the weather before heading to the exhibition. It will be canceled in the event of rain.
