Helpful Hints

DEAR HELOISE: I think this is a brilliant thing to do that worked for me. I had several pairs of backless sandals that flopped when I walked. I took them to the shoe shop, and he found matching elastic for each pair.

Ask for an estimate of costs. I love mine. They are comfortable, and I salvaged several pairs of shoes that I was thinking of giving away.

DEAR READER: B.J.: I was thinking that with one pair as a prototype, could a person who knows how to sew do this on his or her own? And maybe the person could use shoelaces or a decorative ribbon that can be tied anywhere on the ankle. I do like the hint, though.

DEAR HELOISE: When you see something on the internet that you want to remember, save or forward, just take a screen shot. On my tablet, I click the "photo" button and the "on/off" button simultaneously. I get an instant photo in my photo album.

Then I can sort the photos into whatever categories I need, like household hints, legal papers, etc.

DEAR READER: Anyone who wants to use this hint but doesn't know how to do this with your electronic device, do a "how-to" web search, and you will find a "how-to" video to help you with your specific device.

DEAR HELOISE: We just returned to San Antonio from a car trip to Colorado. My hint may be an old one, but it's one I just thought of:

For each passenger, print out a county map, from the internet, of each state being visited. Have a box of colored pencils ready. Each time a county line is crossed (there's usually a sign), color in that county.

Save the maps in a folder for the next time you visit the state. A family could make it a goal to visit every county in the state.

DEAR READER: I just have to ask, are you a retired or an ex-geography teacher? Great lesson!

DEAR READERS: If you have an old wooden door that you want to recycle, consider adding legs to make a table. Cut in half to create desks or end tables.

If it has pane-glass windows, cut that piece off first, paint it and add photos behind the panes to create a frame.
