Where I live: South Fayetteville

Occupation: Director, Clinton House Museum

My favorite space is: My second-story balcony

Why? I love the balcony in front of my condo because the view allows me to take in the Boston Mountains to the south of town. I have filled the space with pretty containers of flowers and plants, and herbs like lavender and rosemary that smell so good in the evening. I'm proud of the fact that my plants have lived as long as they have. Despite growing up on a farm, I do not have a green thumb.

Amid the greenery, I have a little side table that is the perfect size for a coffee cup or wine glass. Two rummage-sale Adirondack chairs give me a place to sink into to read, relax, wave to the neighbors or just gaze at the mountains. Even though it's close to a busy street, it's removed enough to be quiet, so the space is very peaceful. It's not a lot to take care of, which is another reason why I love it.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: My son and I have started a nice tradition of having dinner on the balcony on Sunday nights, so I would make it just a little bigger so I could add a small dining table. I would also add more containers to my "garden."
