Travelers campaign for Clinton in East

WASHINGTON -- Members of the Arkansas Travelers were in western Pennsylvania this weekend, campaigning for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Organizer Sheila Bronfman said 40 people traveled to Pittsburgh and surrounding communities.

"We have four doctors on this trip, lots of lawyers, tons of educators," she said. Several current and former elected officials also made the journey.

They began work Thursday morning in a town called Indiana.

"We did canvassing, phone banks and then we went to the big Democratic dinner there," Bronfman said. "We were the keynote speakers at the Indiana, Pa., Democratic Party Dinner."

Their itinerary Friday included stops in Greensburg, Mount Pleasant and Latrobe, the hometown of recently deceased golfing great Arnold Palmer.

They planned to spend the weekend in Pittsburgh, attending a rally with Clinton on Saturday afternoon and attending church this morning.

The Travelers will return to Arkansas later today, but they'll head to Missouri on Thursday and campaign in Florida beginning Nov. 2.

Cotton totes medals to state WWII vet

U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton traveled to a home in Columbia County on Tuesday to hand-deliver military medals to a World War II veteran.

Julious Elmore, who grew up in the Philadelphia community southwest of Magnolia, returned to Arkansas after serving honorably in the Pacific theater.

Seven decades after Elmore earned the medals, Cotton stopped by to pin them on the veteran's chest.

The Republican from Dardanelle, who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, is a member of the U.S. Senate's Armed Services Committee.

"I'd never been around a senator," Elmore told Shreveport station KSLA-TV, Channel 12. "I'd have never dreamed of it in my lifetime that anything like that would ever happen. I just couldn't hardly believe it."

Elmore wasn't the only person getting recognition last week for service in the war.

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Steve Womack and U.S. Sen. John Boozman, both Republicans from Rogers, presented a medal in Fort Smith to Ralph Watson for his service in the Civil Air Patrol.

Similar events will take place Thursday in Baxter and Marion counties.
